The investigation is focused on examining the longitudinal aerodynamic behavior of aircraft, specifically considering the impacts of flaps and elevators at varying angles of attack. The outcomes from the clean configuration are compared with the results obtained from computational fluid dynamics studies found in existing literature. While the results may not precisely match, they capture the general trends in the behavior of the aircraft. This aligns with the expected outcomes from preliminary methods like AVL and DATCOM. Data fusion techniques are strategically employed to integrate insights from these diverse sources, enhancing the overall accuracy and reliability of the aerodynamic assessment. The research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the clean configuration's aerodynamic performance, contributing significantly to the advancement of aviation technology.Item Open Access Code - Nonlinear Dynamics and Control of a Novel 3-DOF Aircraft-Manipulator for Dynamic Wind Tunnel Tests(2024-09-16) Whidborne, James; Tang, Gilbert; Ishola, AdemayowaItem Open Access Control of plane Poiseuille flow: a theoretical and computational investigation - MATLAB code(Cranfield University, 2022-10-03 15:31) Whidborne, James; McKernan, JohnFeedback Control of Plane Poiseuille Flow - MATLAB Codemincode-version2.zip File contains the functions for the system matrices A,B,C and energy matrix Q for modeling linearized plane Poiseuille flow with wall-transpiration actuation and wall shear-stress measurements, which may be of use for controller synthesis. Abstract: The advancements in the aeronautical industry and research on materials and manufacturing methods in the last 70 years have been shifting the paradigm of wing design to high aspect ratio flexible wings. These wings can show a varying behaviour in different operating conditions, as per the nature of their geometry and materials. This work proposes a case study of a high aspect ratio flexible wing in order to study the effect of operating conditions on its structural properties. To test different operating conditions on the ground, a revolving clamp is designed to attach the specimen to a clamp-on shaker. A clear relationship between the wing’s modal properties, and so structural properties, and the angle the clamp sets is found.Item Open Access Data: Two-phase Gas-Liquid Flow Regimes Identification in an S-shape Pipeline-Riser Using Doppler Ultrasonic Sensor(Cranfield University, 2023-09-08 15:29) Godfrey Nnabuife, Somtochukwu; Whidborne, James; Lao, LiyunDifferent flow regime data was generated experimentally at Cranfield University using a 2-inch multi-phase flow S-shape pipeline-riser test loop. In order to obtain the desired flow regime condition, the air-water flow rate was automatically regulated using the DeltaV system. Allfiles.Mat contains all the Air (Sm3/hr) - Water (Kg/s) flow regime conditions investigated. The data was recorded using the LabVIEW program but converted to a MATLAB file for easy access. All the flow conditions that fall under category 1 are in slugging condition, all that fall into category 2 are in bubbly condition, the ones that fall under category 3 are in churn flow condition and the ones that fall under category 4 are in annular flow condition. Data_wave2.mat is also a MATLAB file that contains all the flow conditions investigated. It contains the same data as in Allfiles.mat. You can use either Data_wave2.mat or Allfiles.mat files.Item Open Access Extremum Seeking Control for Truck Drag Reduction(Cranfield University, 2018-06-20 16:09) Whidborne, James; Garry, KevinMATLAB/Simulink codes for "Extremum Seeking Control for Truck Drag Reduction" G Papageorgiou, J Barden, J Whidborne, K Garry 12th UKACC International Conference on Control Sheffield, UK, 5th - 7th September 2018 Videos: converge.mp4 - shows ESC controller convergence with Speed controller reference, Vr=24 m/s Initial deflector height limits, deltaH=1.16 Gradient and wind speed are set to zeroItem Metadata only Integration of renewable energy sources in tandem with electrolysis: a technology review for green hydrogen production(Elsevier BV, 2024) Nnabuife, Somtochukwu Godfrey; Hamzat, Abdulhammed K.; Whidborne, James; Kuang, Boyu; Jenkins, Karl W.The global shift toward sustainable energy solutions emphasises the urgent need to harness renewable sources for green hydrogen production, presenting a critical opportunity in the transition to a low-carbon economy. Despite its potential, integrating renewable energy with electrolysis to produce green hydrogen faces significant technological and economic challenges, particularly in achieving high efficiency and cost-effectiveness at scale. This review systematically examines the latest advancements in electrolysis technologies—alkaline, proton exchange membrane electrolysis cell (PEMEC), and solid oxide—and explores innovative grid integration and energy storage solutions that enhance the viability of green hydrogen. The study reveals enhanced performance metrics in electrolysis processes and identifies critical factors that influence the operational efficiency and sustainability of green hydrogen production. Key findings demonstrate the potential for substantial reductions in the cost and energy requirements of hydrogen production by optimising electrolyser design and operation. The insights from this research provide a foundational strategy for scaling up green hydrogen as a sustainable energy carrier, contributing to global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and advance toward carbon neutrality. The integration of these technologies could revolutionise energy systems worldwide, aligning with policy frameworks and market dynamics to foster broader adoption of green hydrogen.Item Open Access MATLAB code of examples of solving optimal control problems using the Chebfun system(Cranfield University, 2022-10-03 15:44) Whidborne, JamesMATLAB code of examples of solving optimal control problems using the Chebfun system. liftdragpolar.m - Lift-Drag Polar Example kaiserdiagram.m - Minimum Time to Climb (Kaiser diagram) intercept.m - Intercept Problem trajplanner.m - Minimum Time Trajectory Planning Problem Requires the Chebfun system Please acknowledge and reference via: J.F. In the prior work, Saab 340B flight tests were carried out using different excitations on the control surfaces. The flight test data was collected at predefined trim points. Thrust forces and moment were obtained using the propeller efficiency map provided by the manufacturer. The equation and output error methods were employed to analyse flight test data to estimate aerodynamic parameters in the time domain. The equation and output error methods were employed to analyse flight test data to estimate aerodynamic parameters in the time domain. The paper extends the work to select independent variables in the equation error method in an optimal way using binary particle swarm to determine the best subset of independent variables. The impact of the hyperparameters of the binary PSO approach such as the transfer function scheme, inertia weight updating strategy, and the value of acceleration coefficients is investigated.Item Open Access Simulink/MATLAB code of simulation of L-1 adaptive control for a quadrotor subject to actuator faults(Cranfield University, 2022-10-03 15:56) Whidborne, JamesSimulink/MATLAB code of simulation of L-1 adaptive control for a quadrotor subject to actuator faults.
