Abstract:
Anovelphotothermaldetectorisdescribed,basedonaclosedcellsuitableforusewithlow-frequencymodulatedcontinuous-wavelightsources.Photothermalexpansioninaqueoussamplescausedthedeflectionofawatermeniscusheldacrossa200m-radiuspinhole.Displacementofthewatermeniscuswasmeasuredusingfibreopticinterferometry.Amercurydischargelamp(254nm)andalaserdiode(678nm)wereusedtodetecttoabsorptionby2ppbanthraceneand0.5ppmpotassiumpermanganateinaqueoussolution,respectively.Thetechniquewasusedtodetectdifferencesbetweenabsorptioncoefficientsinaqueoussolutionsdowntoapproximately20%ofthebackgroundabsorptionofthewateritself.
