dc.description.abstract	In 1956 the National Science Foundation made a grant to Aslib for the first stage of an investigation into the camparative efficiency of four indexing systems, This stage of the work continued until March, 1959, and a further grant was made to cover the test programme. It is from the results of this work that the present proposals have evolved.	en
