Item Open Access The Design of Michell Optimum Structures(Cranfield College of Aeronautics, 1960-12) Chan, A. S. L.The fundamental problem of structural design is the determination of structures of minimum weight which safely equilibrate a given system of external forces. The classical theorem of Michell gave basic requirements for such a structure. The first part of this paper analyses the geometrical layout of two-dimensional structures which satisfy these requirements, making use of the analogy with the theory of plane plastic flow. Expressions for the calculation of sizes and the total volume of the structural members are developed. Method of graphical construction of the structural layout is also given.Item Open Access The drag of source distributions in linearized supersonic flow(Cranfield College of Aeronautics, 1955-02) Ward, G. N.Most bodies whose wave drags in supersonic flow have been calculated by linearised theory are such that the flows can be represented by a suitable distribution of sources. The present paper extends this idea by considering the drag problem for the general class of thin and slender bodies which can be replaced by sources only. The flow due to sources is necessarily acyclic, so there can be no local cross-stream forces on such bodies, since their presence would require the introduction of vortex elements.Item Open Access An empirical method for rapidly estimating the loading distributions on swept back wings(Cranfield College of Aeronautics, 1950-01) Stanton Jones, R.This paper describes the derivation of empirical formulae for the loading distribution on straight tapered swept back wings, in terms of the parameters governing the geometric wing plan form. The derivation is based mainly on the results of the Weissinger method but corrections to give better agreement with experimental results have been introduced.Item Open Access On the use of approximate solutions for non linear oscillations(Cranfield College of Aeronautics, 1974-08) Padfield, Gareth D.Item Open Access Optimum Mitchell Frameworks for Three Parallel Forces(Cranfield College of Aeronautics, 1963-08) Chan, H. S. Y.The design of Mitchell optimum structures to carry three coplanar forces has been the most popular topic in this field. However, the mathematical technique involved so far has been rather limited in as much as only strictly symmetrical cases have been considered. It is the intention of the present paper to apply the general theory of optimum design to a rather complicated problem of this type, and study in full detail the outcoming mathematical concepts, both numerical and theoretical.
