Item Open Access The effect of Cu content on the microstructure and properties of the wire arc additive manufacturing Al-Cu alloy(MDPI, 2023-03-28) Ren, Lingling; Wang, Zhenbiao; Wang, Shuai; Li, Chengde; Wang, Wei; Ming, Zhu; Zhai, YuchunAl-Cu alloy has broad application prospects in the field of aerospace due to its excellent performance. In this paper, deposits with different Cu contents were prepared by the wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) process, and the effects of Cu content on the microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated. The microstructure of Al-Cu alloy was investigated by metallography, scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive spectrometer (EDS), and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The results show that both the number and size of the precipitated θ phases (Al2Cu) in the as-deposited material increase with the increase of Cu content. After the T4 treatment, the solid solution amount of Cu in the matrix showed a trend of first increasing and then remaining stable. When the content of Cu was greater than 5.65%, as the Cu content increased, the number and size of the remaining θ phases both increased. In the peak ageing state, the amount of precipitated θ’ phase showed a trend of increasing and then remaining stable. After the T6 treatment, the mechanical properties showed a trend of first increasing and then decreasing with the increase of the content of Cu. When the Cu content was 5.65%, the deposit achieved the best mechanical properties, and the anisotropy of the mechanical properties disappeared. The tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation reached 538 MPa, 478 MPa, and 10.5%, respectively. When the content of Cu was greater than 5.65%, the anisotropy of mechanical properties was obvious, and the fracture mode of the vertical specimen changed from ductile fracture to brittle fracture.Item Open Access Enhanced hydrogen production from thermochemical processes(Royal Society of Chemistry, 2018-07-24) Ji, Guozhao; Yao, Joseph G.; Clough, Peter T.; Diniz da Costa, João C.; Anthony, Edward J.; Fennell, Paul S.; Wang, Wei; Zhao, MingTo alleviate the pressing problem of greenhouse gas emissions, the development and deployment of sustainable energy technologies is necessary. One potentially viable approach for replacing fossil fuels is the development of a H2 economy. Not only can H2 be used to produce heat and electricity, it is also utilised in ammonia synthesis and hydrocracking. H2 is traditionally generated from thermochemical processes such as steam reforming of hydrocarbons and the water-gas-shift (WGS) reaction. However, these processes suffer from low H2 yields owing to their reversible nature. Removing H2 with membranes and/or extracting CO2 with solid sorbents in situ can overcome these issues by shifting the component equilibrium towards enhanced H2 production via Le Chatelier's principle. This can potentially result in reduced energy consumption, smaller reactor sizes and, therefore, lower capital costs. In light of this, a significant amount of work has been conducted over the past few decades to refine these processes through the development of novel materials and complex models. Here, we critically review the most recent developments in these studies, identify possible research gaps, and offer recommendations for future research.Item Open Access Identification of discrete-time output error model for industrial processes with time delay subject to load disturbance(Elsevier, 2016-12-22) Dong, Shijian; Liu, Tao; Wang, Wei; Bao, Jie; Cao, YiIn this paper, a bias-eliminated output error model identification method is proposed for industrial processes with time delay subject to unknown load disturbance with deterministic dynamics. By viewing the output response arising from such load disturbance as a dynamic parameter for estimation, a recursive least-squares identification algorithm is developed in the discrete-time domain to estimate the linear model parameters together with the load disturbance response, while the integer delay parameter is derived by using a one-dimensional searching approach to minimize the output fitting error. An auxiliary model is constructed to realize consistent estimation of the model parameters against stochastic noise. Moreover, dual adaptive forgetting factors are introduced with tuning guidelines to improve the convergence rates of estimating the model parameters and the load disturbance response, respectively. The convergence of model parameter estimation is analyzed with a rigorous proof. Illustrative examples for open- and closed-loop identification are shown to demonstrate the effectiveness and merit of the proposed identification method.Item Open Access A modified ant colony algorithm for the stacking sequence optimisation of a rectangular laminate(Springer Science Business Media, 2010-05-31T00:00:00Z) Wang, Wei; Guo, Shijun J.; Chang, Nan; Zhao, Feng; Yang, WeiThis paper presents a modified Ant Colony Algorithm (ACA) called multi-city- layer ant colony algorithm (MCLACA). The research attention is focused on improving the computational efficiency in the stacking sequence optimisation of a laminated composite plate for maximum buckling load. A new operator, the so- called two point interchange, is introduced and proved to be effective for reducing the convergence time and enhancing the robustness in the MCLACA performance. The laminate optimisation is subject to balanced and symmetric layup with ply contiguous and strength constraints. In order to assess the MCLACA performance, a simply supported rectangular laminate plate, which was taken as numerical example in previous research using traditional ACA and genetic algorithm (GA) is chosen as a benchmark case study. Comparing with the ACA and GA results, it is shown that the presented MCLACA has better performance in terms of computational efficiency and robustness. To demonstrate the applicability of the MCLACA to a general case, an additional example of laminate optimisation has been taken with more design variables and five different boundary conditions by finite element analysis.Item Open Access Optimum buckling design of composite stiffened panels using ant colony algorithm(Elsevier Science B.V., Amsterdam., 2010-02-01T00:00:00Z) Wang, Wei; Guo, Shijun J.; Chang, Nan; Yang, WeiOptimal design of laminated composite stiffened panels of symmetric and balanced layup with different number of T-shape stiffeners is investigated and presented. The stiffened panels are simply supported and subjected to uniform biaxial compressive load. In the optimization for the maximum buckling load without weight penalty, the panel skin and the stiffened laminate stacking sequence, thickness and the height of the stiffeners are chosen as design variables. The optimization is carried out by applying an ant colony algorithm (ACA) with the ply contiguous constraint taken into account. The finite strip method is employed in the buckling analysis of the stiffened panels. The results shows that the buckling load increases dramatically with the number of stiffeners at first, and then has only a small improvement after the number of stiffeners reaches a certain value. An optimal layup of the skin and stiffener laminate has also been obtained by using the ACA. The methods presented in this paper should be applicable to the design of stiffened composite panels in similar loading conditions.Item Open Access Power generation expansion optimization model considering multi-scenario electricity demand constraints: a case study of Zhejiang Province, China(MDPI, 2018-06-08) Wang, Peng; Wang, Chunsheng; Hu, Yukun; Varga, Liz; Wang, WeiReasonable and effective power planning contributes a lot to energy efficiency improvement, as well as the formulation of future economic and energy policies for a region. Since only a few provinces in China have nuclear power plants so far, nuclear power plants were not considered in many provincial-level power planning models. As an extremely important source of power generation in the future, the role of nuclear power plants can never be overlooked. In this paper, a comprehensive and detailed optimization model of provincial-level power generation expansion considering biomass and nuclear power plants is established from the perspective of electricity demand uncertainty. This model has been successfully applied to the case study of Zhejiang Province. The findings suggest that the nuclear power plants will contribute 9.56% of the total installed capacity, and it will become the second stable electricity source. The lowest total discounted cost is 1033.28 billion RMB and the fuel cost accounts for a large part of the total cost (about 69%). Different key performance indicators (KPI) differentiate electricity demand in scenarios that are used to test the model. Low electricity demand in the development mode of the comprehensive adjustment scenario (COML) produces the optimal power development path, as it provides the lowest discounted cost.Item Open Access Simulation of hard projectile impact on friction stir welded plate(Cranfield University, 2011-12) Wang, Wei; De Vuyst, TomA numerical simulation is conducted using LS-DYNA to simulate hard projectile impact on a friction stir welded (FSW) plate. As the hard projectile has a wide range of velocity, mass and shape, when referring to AMC 25.963(e) of CS-25, ―Fuel Tank Access Cover‖, the hard projectile can be defined as 9.5 mm cubic-shaped steel engine debris with an initial impact velocity of 213.4 m/s (700 ft/s). This preliminary study was to evaluate whether the fuel tank adjacent skin panel joined by FSW would pass the regulation. First, the geometry and Johnson-Cook material model of the FSW joint were developed based on previous experimental research and validated by comparison with the tensile test on the FSW specimen. Then the impact on an Aluminium Alloy 2024 (AA 2024) plate without FSW was modelled. The minimum thickness of a homogeneous AA 2024 plate which could withstand the impact from engine debris is 3 mm. Finally the impact on 3 mm thick AA 2024 FSW plate was simulated. The welding induced residual stress was implemented in the plate model. The impact centre was changed from the nugget zone to the thermo-mechanically affected zone, heat-affected zone and base material zone of the FSW joint. Penetration only occurred in the model with impact centre on the nugget zone. Additional simulation indicated that increasing the thickness of the FSW plate to 3.6 mm could prevent the penetration.Item Open Access Simultaneous partial topology and size optimization of a wing structure using ant colony and gradient based methods(Taylor & Francis, 2011-04-30T00:00:00Z) Wang, Wei; Guo, Shijun J.; Yang, WeiThis article presents a methodology and process for a combined wing configuration partial topology and structure size optimization. It is aimed at achieving a minimum structural weight by optimizing the structure layout and structural component size simultaneously. This design optimization process contains two types of design variables and hence was divided into two sub- problems. One is structure layout topology to obtain an optimal number and location of spars with discrete integer design variables. Another is component size optimization with continuous design variables in the structure FE model. A multi city-layer ant colony optimization (MCLACO) method is proposed and applied to the topology sub-problem. A gradient based optimization method (GBOM) built in the MSC.NASTRAN SOL-200 module was employed in the component size optimization sub-problem. For each selected layout of the wing structure, a size optimization process is performed to obtain the optimum result and feedback to the layout topology process. The numerical example shows that the proposed MCLACO method and a combination with the GBOM are effective for solving such a wing structure optimization problem. The results also indicate that significant structural weight saving can be achieved.
