Item Open Access Comparative sanitation data from high-frequency phone surveys across 3 countries(Elsevier, 2024-06-26) Lewis, Amy R.; Bell, Andrew R.; Casas, Ana; Kupiec-Teahan, Beata; Mendoza Sanchez, José; Willcock, Simon; Anciano, Fiona; Barrington, Dani J.; Dube, Mmeli; Hutchings, Paul; Karani, Caroline; Llaxacondor, Arturo; López, Hellen; Mdee, Anna L.; Ofori, Alesia D.; Riungu, Joy N.; Russel, Kory C.; Parker, Alison H.With less than half of the worldʼs urban population having safely managed sanitation due to the high cost and difficulty of building sewers and treatment plants, many rely on off-grid options like pit latrines and septic tanks, which are hard to empty and often lead to illegal waste dumping; this research focuses on container-based sanitation (CBS) as an emerging off-grid solution. Off-grid sanitation refers to waste management systems that operate independently of centralized infrastructure and CBS is a service providing toilets that collect human waste in sealable containers, which are regularly emptied and safely disposed of. These data relate to a project investigating CBS in Kenya, Peru, and South Africa, focusing on how different user groups access and utilize sanitation – contrasting CBS with other types. Participants, acting as citizen scientists, collected confidential data through a dedicated smartphone app designed by the authors and external contractors. This project aimed to explore the effective scaling, management, and regulation of off-grid sanitation systems, relevant to academics in urban planning, water and sanitation services, institutional capability, policy and governance, and those addressing inequality and poverty reduction. The 12-month data collection period offered participants small incentives for weekly engagement, in a micro payment for micro tasks approach. Participants were randomly selected, attended a training workshop, and (where needed) were given a smartphone which they could keep at the end of the project. We conducted weekly smartphone surveys in over 300 households across informal settlements. These surveys aimed to understand human-environment interactions by capturing daily life, wellbeing, income, infrastructural service use, and socioeconomic variables at a weekly resolution, contributing to more informed analyses and decision-making. The smartphone-based approach offers efficient, cost-effective, and flexible data collection, enabling extensive geographical coverage, broad subject areas, and frequent engagement. The Open Data Kit (ODK) tools were used to support data collection in the resource-constrained environment with limited or intermittent connectivity.Item Open Access Environmental associated emotional distress and the dangers of climate change for pastoralist mental health(Elsevier, 2019-11-02) Cooper, Sarah; Hutchings, Paul; Butterworth, John A.; Joseph, Solome; Kebede, Abinet; Parker, Alison H.; Terefe, Bethel; Van Koppen, BarbaraPastoralists in the Horn of Africa are among the most vulnerable populations to climate change yet little is known about how environmental change shapes their wellbeing and mental health. This paper presents a formative study into the relations between emotion, wellbeing and water security among pastoralist communities in Afar, Ethiopia. It uses focus group and interview data to demonstrate the close relationship between environmental conditions and emotional wellbeing, and shows how current water insecurity leads to extreme worry and fatigue among the studied population, especially in the dry season. In the context of difficulties of translating mental health clinical classifications and diagnostic tools in cross-cultural settings, the paper argues the inductive study of emotion may be a useful approach for studying environmental determined wellbeing outcomes among marginal populations in the light of understanding climate change impacts.Item Open Access An examination of the hydrological system of a sand dam during the dry season leading to water balances(Elsevier, 2019-06-13) Quinn, Ruth; Rushton, Kenneth R.; Parker, Alison H.To address water scarcity in semi-arid regions, rainfall and runoff need to be captured and stored locally before they are lost to the sea. This can be done using a sand dam which consists of a reinforced wall constructed during the dry season across a seasonal riverbed. However it is unclear whether their main utility is to store water in the sand that is also trapped behind them, or to facilitate aquifer recharge. This paper aims to answer this question by the calculation of a water balance in three sand dams in Kenya to quantify the amount of water transferred between the sand dam and the surrounding aquifer system. The components of the water balance were derived from extensive field monitoring. Water level monitoring in piezometers installed along the length of the sand deposits enabled calculation of the hydraulic gradient and hence the lateral flow between the different reaches of the sand dam. In one sand dam water was gained consistently through the dry season, in one it was lost, and in the third it was lost almost all the time except for the early dry season in the upper part of the trapped sand. In conclusion sand dams should not be treated as isolated water storage structures.Item Open Access Managing power dissipation in closed-loop reverse electrodialysis to maximise energy recovery during thermal-to-electric conversion(Elsevier, 2020-09-09) Hulme, A. M.; Davey, Christopher J.; Parker, Alison H.; Williams, Leon; Tyrrel, Sean F.; Jiang, Ying; Pidou, Marc; McAdam, EwanWhilst the efficiency of reverse electrodialysis (RED) for thermal-to-electrical conversion has been theoretically demonstrated for low-grade waste heat, the specific configuration and salinity required to manage power generation has been less well described. This study demonstrates that operating RED by recycling feed solutions provides the most suitable configuration for energy recovery from a fixed solution volume, providing a minimum unitary cost for energy production. For a fixed membrane area, recycling feeds achieves energy efficiency seven times higher than single pass (conventional operation), and with an improved power density. However, ionic transport, water flux and concentration polarisation introduce complex temporal effects when concentrated brines are recirculated, that are not ordinarily encountered in single pass systems. Regeneration of the concentration gradient at around 80% energy dissipation was deemed most economically pragmatic, due to the increased resistance to mass transport beyond this threshold. However, this leads to significant exergy destruction that could be improved by interventions to better control ionic build up in the dilute feed. Further improvements to energy efficiency were fostered through optimising current density for each brine concentration independently. Whilst energy efficiency was greatest at lower brine concentrations, the work produced from a fixed volume of feed solution was greatest at higher saline concentrations. Since the thermal-to-electrical conversion proposed is governed by volumetric heat utilisation (distillation to reset the concentration gradient), higher brine concentrations are therefore recommended to improve total system efficiency. Importantly, this study provides new evidence for the configuration and boundary conditions required to realise RED as a practical solution for application to sources of low-grade waste heat in industryItem Open Access Menstrual management: a neglected aspect of hygiene interventions(Emerald Group Publishing Limited, 2014-12-31T00:00:00Z) Parker, Alison H.; Smith, Jennifer A.; Verdemato, Tania; Cooke, Jeanette; Webster, James; Carter, Richard C.Purpose - Effective menstrual management is essential for the mental and physical well being of women. However, many women in low-income countries lack access to the materials and facilities required. They are thus restricted in their activities whilst menstruating thus compromising their education, income and domestic responsibilities. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach - This study describes the menstrual management challenges faced by women in an emergency situation in Uganda. Totally, 50 interviews and focus group discussions were conducted with women from villages, internally displaced person (IDP) camps and schools so that the menstrual management of the host population could be compared with the IDPs. Findings - This study showed that in IDP camps there was a significant lack of materials including soap, underpants and absorbing cloth, and facilities like latrines and bathing shelters. As a consequence women in IDP camps suffer with poor health and diminished dignity. There is also a lack of education about menstruation and reproductive health and practices are strongly influenced by cultural taboos. Originality/value - This is the first time that the menstrual management of women in IDP or refugee camps has been studied.Item Open Access The multiple uses of water derived from managed aquifer recharge systems in Kenya and India(IWA, 2022-01-19) Parker, Alison H.; Nyangoka, Justus; Rodrigues, Inês; Yadav, B.; Le Corre Pidou, Kristell; Campo Moreno, Pablo; Quinn, Ruth‘Multiple-use services’ (MUS) takes into account the fact that households use water for both domestic and for productive uses. This paper is the first to determine how managed aquifer recharge (MAR) systems are a form of MUS. Two cases were studied in India and in Kenya. In the Kenyan case, sand dams are the form of MAR, and in India check dams and infiltration ponds of various scales are used. Through observations, interviews, and water quality data, it is possible to describe how the communities access the water from these infrastructures in multiple ways for different uses, according to their water needs and the characteristics of the different access points. MAR involves harvesting rainwater and retaining run-off water into the dry season thus increasing the amount of available water and enabling diversification of water uses. It should therefore be considered as an option by water managers aiming to develop water resources meeting both the domestic and productive needs of communities.Item Open Access Risk management for drinking water supplies in developing countries :the influence of culture on water safety plans(Cranfield University, 2013-12) Omar, Yahya Yussuf; Pollard, Simon J. T.; Parker, Alison H.; Webster, James; Smith, Jennifer A.Consumption of unsafe water in developing countries results in considerable number of illnesses and deaths annually. The World Health Organization and the International Water Association are promoting the use of water safety plans (WSPs), a risk management approach aimed at attaining water safety. This study investigated how culture impacts on the implementation of WSPs in these countries. Combining interpretive and critical paradigms resulted in the choice of qualitative methodologies utilizing multiple-case studies. Cases from India, Uganda, and Jamaica are each embedded with three units of analysis: promoters of WSPs, water utilities and their customers. Thematic analysis of data generated from semi-structured interviews, field observations and documents revealed eleven cultural factors impacting on the implementation of WSPs. Analyses of these factors led to various groupings and the subsequent development of a taxonomy categorizing these factors as being either enabling, limiting, or neutral in relation to WSPs. Findings show all the limiting factors to be deviations from the values and principles on which they are built. The findings have also led to the development of a culturally adapted risk management framework. This four-step cyclical & iterative framework is designed to address the impact of culture on the implementation of WSPs. The implementation of WSPs will take time and will require continuous improvement to the process. The successful management of drinking water risks in developing countries will require a broad institutional approach and a concerted effort that involves institutions beyond the water utilities. As such, targeted recommendations are first made towards achievement of good governance. Activities that will lead to the embracement of WSP by stakeholders along with suggestions to attain its institutionalization are also put forward. Recommendations towards addressing negative cultural factors include suggestions on dealing with: pollution causing rituals, bettering storage related practices, addressing excessive water use in rituals, counteracting belief that water should be free, fighting corruption and improving compliance, changing deliver-first safety-later attitude, and improving knowledge management practices.Item Open Access A simple inverse method for the interpretation of pumped flowing fluid electrical conductivity logs(Wiley, 2014-07-11) Moir, R. T.Pumped flowing fluid electrical conductivity (FFEC) logs, also known as pumped borehole dilution testing, is an experimentally easy‐to‐perform approach to evaluating vertical variations in the hydraulic conductivity of an aquifer. In contrast to the simplicity of the logging equipment, analysis of the data is complex and laborious. Current methods typically require repeated solution of the advection‐dispersion equation (ADE) for describing the flow in the borehole and comparison with the experimental results. In this paper, we describe a direct solution for determining borehole fluid velocity that bypasses the need for complex numerical computation and repetitive optimization. The method rests on the observation that, while solving the ADE for concentration profile in the borehole (as required for modeling and combined methods) is computationally challenging, the solution for flow distribution along the length of the borehole given concentration data is straightforward. The method can accommodate varying borehole diameters, and uses the fact that multiple profiles are taken in the standard logging approach to reduce the impact of noise. Data from both a simulated borehole and from a field test are successfully analyzed. The method is implemented in a spreadsheet, which is available as supporting information material to this paper.
