Afshin; Aktas, Emel; Besikci, UmutSustainability considerations in manufacturing scheduling, which is traditionally influenced by service oriented performance metrics, have rarely been adopted in the literature. This paper aims to address this gap by incorporating energy consumption as an explicit criterion in shop floor scheduling. Leveraging the variable speed of machining operations leading to different energy consumption levels, we explore the potential for energy saving in manufacturing. We analyze the trade-off between minimizing makespan, a measure of service level and total energy consumption, an indicator for environmental sustainability of a two-machine sequence dependent permutation flowshop. We develop a mixed integer linear multi-objective optimization model to find the Pareto frontier comprised of makespan and total energy consumption. To cope with combinatorial complexity, we also develop a constructive heuristic for fast trade-off analysis between makespan and energy consumption. We define lower bounds for the two objectives under some non-restrictive conditions and compare the performance of the constructive heuristic with CPLEX through design of experiments. The lower bounds that we develop are valid under realistic assumptions since they are conditional on speed factors. The Pareto frontier includes solutions ranging from expedited, energy intensive schedules to prolonged, energy efficient schedules. It can serve as a visual aid for production and sales planners to consider energy consumption explicitly in making quick decisions while negotiating with customers on due dates. We provide managerial insights by analyzing the areas along the Pareto frontier where energy saving can be justified at the expense of reduced service level and vice versa.Item Open Access Judgmental adjustments through supply integration for strategic partnerships in food chains(Elsevier, 2018-11-10) Eksoz, Can; Mansouri, S. Afshin; Bourlakis, Michael; Önkal, DilekDespite significant attention to strategic partnerships among members of supply chains, there has been limited research in food supply chains where such partnerships can provide a competitive advantage through forecasting practices of time-sensitive food items in volatile business environments. The current paper aims to close this gap by examining manufacturers’ strategic partnerships with retailers, with a special emphasis on information sharing, integration, and collaborative forecasting of time-sensitive products in food supply chains. Through Partial Least Square (PLS) analysis of survey data collected from 105 food manufacturers in Europe and North America, this research reveals the importance of strategic partnerships for satisfaction from forecasts generated for perishable, seasonal, promotional and newly-launched products in the food industry. Group forecasting and manufacturers’ external integration with retailers are found to be significant for strategic partnerships. In addition, our findings show that manufacturers’ internal integration is positively associated with group forecasting, external integration and judgmental adjustments. Our findings also reveal that information sharing with retailers facilitates consensus forecasts in group forecasting. These results provide unique insights to researchers and practitioners of human judgment in supply chain forecasting towards enhancing strategic partnerships in food supply chains.Item Open Access Minimizing energy consumption and makespan in a two-machine flowshop scheduling problem(Palgrave MacMillan, 2016-04-06) Mansouri, S. Afshin; Aktas, EmelEnergy consumption has become a key concern for manufacturing sector because of negative environmental impact of operations. We develop constructive heuristics and multi-objective genetic algorithms (MOGA) for a two-machine sequence-dependent permutation flowshop problem to address the trade-off between energy consumption as a measure of sustainability and makespan as a measure of service level. We leverage the variable speed of operations to develop energy-efficient schedules that minimize total energy consumption and makespan. As minimization of energy consumption and minimization of makespan are conflicting objectives, the solutions to this problem constitute a Pareto frontier. We compare the performance of constructive heuristics and MOGAs with CPLEX and random search in a wide range of problem instances. The results show that MOGAs hybridized with constructive heuristics outperform regular MOGA and heuristics alone in terms of quality and cardinality of Pareto frontier. We provide production planners with new and scalable solution techniques that will enable them to make informed decisions considering energy consumption together with service objectives in shop floor scheduling.Item Open Access The relationship between green supply chain management and performance: a meta-analysis of empirical evidences in Asian emerging economics(Elsevier, 2016-10-06) Geng, Ruoqi; Mansouri, S. Afshin; Aktas, EmelThe purpose of this study is to understand the relationship between green supply chain management (GSCM) practices and firm performance in the manufacturing sector in Asian emerging economies (AEE) based on empirical evidence. Through a systematic literature review, we identified 50 articles that surveyed 11,127 manufacturing companies in the AEE and were published between 1996 and 2015. Subsequently, a conceptual framework was developed and analyzed through a meta-analysis of 130 effects from 25,680 effect sizes. The findings revealed that the GSCM practices lead to better performance in four aspects: economic, environmental, operational, and social performance. Moreover, the results indicate that industry type, firm size, ISO certification, and export orientation moderate several of the GSCM practice-performance relationships. Moreover, the findings of this research help managers and policy makers to have more confidence in the adoption of GSCM practices to improve firm performance. Such results also help researchers to better channel their efforts in studying the GSCM practices in Asian emerging economies. In addition, as meta-analysis has not been widely used in the supply chain management literature, our study is an important step in maturing the academic field by adopting this technique for confirming GSCM practice-performance relationships in the manufacturing sector of Asian emerging economies.Item Open Access The role of Guanxi in green supply chain management in Asia's emerging economies: a conceptual framework(Elsevier, 2017-01-17) Geng, Ruoqi; Mansouri, S. Afshin; Aktas, Emel; Yen, Dorothy A.In recent decades, rapid industrial modernization and economic growth have brought substantial environmental problems such as air pollution, hazardous waste, and water pollution for the Asian emerging economies (AEE), in particular China, Taiwan, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and South Korea. These countries have started to adopt green supply chain management (GSCM) as a strategy to reduce the environmental impact. There are anecdotal evidences that the adoption of GSCM in this region is partly influenced by Guanxi – a cultural norm, which plays a significant role in relationship governance within supply chain activities among the AEE. Based on a systematic literature review, we develop a conceptual framework that characterizes the drivers and barriers for the adoption of GSCM practices, incorporating Guanxi as a moderator in the manufacturing sector of the AEE. The conceptual framework addresses the roles of two types of Guanxi in the adoption of GSCM: the relational Guanxi at individual level based on social exchange theory and the aggregated Guanxi at firm level derived from social capital theory. This recognition of Guanxi at two separate decision levels help companies better manage their relationships while they green their supply chains. Directions for future research and managerial implications are discussed accordingly.
