Item Open Access The design of a multi-cell box in pure bending for minimum weight(College of Aeronautics, 1957-11) Houghton, D.S.; Chan, A. S. L.The optimum skin thickness, web thickness and web pitch to be used for a multi-cell box of given depth under a given bending load are obtained by two different methods, resulting in a graph where the optimum geometry is plotted against the structural index for a given materialItem Open Access The Design of Michell Optimum Structures(Cranfield College of Aeronautics, 1960-12) Chan, A. S. L.The fundamental problem of structural design is the determination of structures of minimum weight which safely equilibrate a given system of external forces. The classical theorem of Michell gave basic requirements for such a structure. The first part of this paper analyses the geometrical layout of two-dimensional structures which satisfy these requirements, making use of the analogy with the theory of plane plastic flow. Expressions for the calculation of sizes and the total volume of the structural members are developed. Method of graphical construction of the structural layout is also given.Item Open Access A note on the discontinuity stresses at the junction of a pressurised spherical shell and a cylinder(College of Aeronautics, 1958-01) Houghton, D. S.; Chan, A. S. L.An analysis has been made of the forces and moments occurring at the junction of a pressurised spherical shell with an intersecting cylinder. The additional effects of having a temperature gradient along the length of the cylinder and the effect of a jointing ring have been considered.
