Item Open Access Explore and evaluate organisational culture aspects that affecting Lean implementation within manufacturing SMEs: the case of Saudi Arabia(Inderscience, 2018-12-31) Alkhoraif, Abdullah; McLaughlin, PatrickThere is a scarcity of research about cultural aspects and organizational culture related to Lean Implementation (LI) (Pakdil and Leonard 2015). In order to addressing the need for Organizational Culture (OC) to better facilitate Lean and propel its success among Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Saudi Arabia as a case, requires a methodology which supports the research and analysis of OC. Grounded theory, action research and an inductive approach has been selected. Due to the nature of the topic requiring the exploration of culture, it is beneficial to utilise qualitative research which is provided by grounded theory that has been adopted. Thus, adhering to the grounded theory process utilising an issue focused approach, (Sackmann, 1991). Semi-structured interviews, observations and focus-groups were chosen to conduct this exploratory study. 37 aspects have been identified from semi-structured interviews. All these aspects have been aggregated through focus groups to 7 main themes.Item Open Access A framework to improve lean implementation by review leveraging aspects of organizational culture: The case of Saudi Arabia(Inderscience, 2019-06-26) Alkhoraif, Abdullah; McLaughlin, Patrick; Rashid, HamadOrganisational culture is one of the most important factors to focus on to facilitate the implementation of lean within Saudi Arabian manufacturing. Thus, this article focuses on contributing to develop a framework to improve lean implementation into small and medium enterprise manufacturing organisations in Saudi Arabia by leveraging aspects of organisational culture. Qualitative research is confirmed to be useful for uncovering such insider views on qualitative and grounded theory inside action research with and an inductive approach. The proposed framework aimed to facilitate lean implementation by leveraging aspects of organisational culture. A series of interventions developed with participants. The planned interventions for SMEs are should take place together as a series of interlinked interventions. The contributions of this study are threefold: First, no previous framework of Lean implementation in SMEs, to knowledge about the failure of lean implementation. Finally, it supports the academic society with scheme for proposal future research.Item Open Access Lean implementation in small and medium enterprises: Literature review(Elsevier, 2018-12-07) Alkhoraif, Abdullah; Rashid, Hamad; McLaughlin, PatrickThere have been many literature reviews carried out on Lean implementation (LI) in larger organisations with specific focus on the automobile industry. Lean implementation among Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) has not been so extensively researched. This paper attempts to bridge this gap by reviewing the literature that discussed Lean implementation in SMEs with a perspective of identifying the main challenges faced. We applied the Systematic Review Methodology proposed by Tranfield et al. (2003). This methodology allows for more comprehensive and profounder analysis along three stages: planning, conducting, and reporting. For this study, 403 papers were utilized, with their titles, abstracts and keywords separately studied at early stages of the review. These were collated from specific databases that included: ABI/INFORM Global, Taylor & Francis, Emerald, Sage, Inderscince, BSCO Business Source Premier, ScienceDirect and Scopus. The collected information was classified into four categories for more synthesis. The aim of this study is to establish the current position of global understanding of Lean implementation in SME's, including examining the main categories of Lean implementation in the context of SMEs. Next, an inclusive discussion of associated Critical Success Factors (CSFs) for Lean implementation within SME's is established that can be used as guide for SME's owners and managers. Suggestions for future research orientations are thus provided.Item Open Access Lean implementation within manufacturing SMEs in Saudi Arabia: Organizational culture aspects(Elsevier, 2018-04-12) Alkhoraif, Abdullah; McLaughlin, PatrickThere is a scarcity of research about cultural aspects and organizational culture related to Lean Implementation (LI) (Pakdil and Leonard, 2015). The purpose if this paper divided into four stages. First, to identified the influences aspects of Lean Implementation (LI). Second, aggregate the aspects into themes. Third, gauging current perception of participants against the themes. Finally, identified a culture position that manufacturing SMEs should aspire to the most effective Lean Implementation (LI). In order to addressing the need for Organizational Culture (OC) to better facilitate Lean and propel its success among Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Saudi Arabia as a case, grounded theory, action research and an inductive approach has been selected. Due to the nature of the topic requiring the exploration of culture, it is beneficial to utilise qualitative research which is provided by grounded theory that has been adopted. Thus, adhering to the grounded theory process utilising an issue focused approach (Sackmann, 1991). Twenty-nine semi-structured interviews and two focus-groups were chosen to conduct this exploratory study and a questionnaire which has been derived from the second focus group to gauge the OC themes within the SMEs, A total of 71 responses were returned. A literature review to identified the ideal position for the themes. An inter-rate reliability to validate data. The finding of the semi-structured interviews were 37 aspects that influences the implementation of Lean in manufacturing SMEs within Saudi Arabia. In addition, the 37 aspects were aggregate into 7 themes in the first focus group. Moreover, the result form questionnaire indicates many issues that were identified, all the results were in the dissatisfaction area. The lowest scoring theme was change management and behaviour patterns. This paper contributes to the ideal position were the manufacturing SMEs where it should be to aspire the most effective Lean.Item Open Access A methodology to surface aspects of organizational culture to facilitate lean implementation within SMEs(Inderscience, 2018-12-31) Alkhoraif, Abdullah; McLaughlin, PatrickThe purpose of this paper is to provide an instructional guidance on how to surface aspects of Organizational Culture that effect Lean Implementation within small and medium sized manufacturing organization. This paper describe how Grounded theory and Action research can be used inside each other. The paper suggests to not only use a translation method to validate the result but to use also Inter-rate reliability to increase the validity and reduce the subjectivity. The paper also demonstrates how different technique can help management research by including in a time effective way.Item Open Access Organisational culture - Enablers and inhibitors factors for the effective implementation of lean(Konya Teknokent, Selcuk University, 2017-12-31) Alkhoraif, Abdullah; McLaughlin, PatrickLean systems are used effectively in various organisations to improve productivity. Although Lean is a thoroughly discussed method within industries, there is a scarcity of research about cultural aspects and organizational culture related to Lean Implementation (LI). The paper aims to identify and explore organizational culture (OC) enablers and inhibitors of Lean Implementation (LI) in a Small and Medium-sized Manufacturing (SME) organization and the influences of organizational culture (OC) for continuous improvement. It proposes aspects of the Lean Implementation process and how these processes are affected by organizational culture. The study further explains how an organization can improve their implementation process of Lean by adopting Schein Model as a conceptual framework. A literature review research methodology used to identify the (OC) enablers and inhibitors for continuous improvement of Lean Implementation (LI). The literature review establishes the of Lean philosophy, benefits, assessment and the challenges of Lean implementation in SMEs. Moreover, the important of organizational culture, models of (OC), assessments of (OC) and conceptual framework of Schein’s Model. In addition, empirical evidence from reviewed literature shows that an organization cannot succeed in Lean implementation unless it has a healthy organizational culture.Item Open Access Organisational culture that inhibit the lean implementation(The International Academic Forum, 2016-07-10) Alkhoraif, Abdullah; McLaughlin, PatrickLack of research regarding the critical factor of organisational culture related to lean implementation and Culture is the key factor to making the changes for lean implementation (Pakdil and Leonard, 2015a). Implementing lean into industrial SMEs faces difficulties, whereas it is more likely to be implemented successfully in larger companies, which then gain the advantages of lean systems(Karim et al., 2011). Moreover, the culture of an organisation plays a vital role, especially for managers facing the challenge to change that culture(Graham-jones and Muhareb, 2015). According to the European Commission (2003) the purpose of this paper SMEs refer to organisations with fewer than 250 employees. The aim is to develop an Organisational Culture to improve Lean Implementation into Manufacturing Organisation SMEs by analyses the organisational culture aspects that enable and inhibit lean implementation, through a literature review. Finally the question will be what are the organisational culture enablers for lean implementation in manufacturing SMEs. Systematic review methodology applied to this research. The main aim of this research is to develop an organisational culture to facilitate lean implementation before adopting the lean system. It has been observed that the appropriate lean culture enhances the pace of the growth and keeps the firm competitive (Pooyan et al, 2014). These inhibiting factors, and indeed those factors that encourage this behaviour can be graphically displayed and tabulated, allowing deeper analysis of each, to find its roots and, where necessary, remove it from the company culture (Hietschold et al, 2014)Item Open Access Organizational culture aspects that facilitate lean implementation: a pilot study(Inderscience, 2018-06-08) Alkhoraif, Abdullah; McLaughlin, PatrickThe paper aims to identify enablers and inhibitors of Lean Implementation (LI) in a small and medium-sized manufacturing (SME) organisation in Saudi Arabia. The paper opted for an exploratory study using the semi-structure interview approach of grounded theory, including seven in-depth interviews with employees representing from top management to the workers in the workshop having mainly an experience of Lean Implementation background. The data was complemented by context analysis, including simultaneous and concurrent data collection and constant comparison methods. It suggests successful communication and teamwork. However, there were two codes which had not been evidenced in prior research and were not identified in the literature review. These include; 'multiple decision makers' and the 'family effect'. This paper fulfils an identified need to study how organisational culture affects LI. It demonstrates the current state of LI in manufacturing companies by uncovering the enablers and inhibitors of organisational culture.
