Item Open Access The design of a numerically controlled drilling system using fluidic elements 1966/7(College of Aeronautics, 1967) Powell, E. A.; Boshier, G. C.This report outlines the aims of the project and procedures used to bring it to a successful conclusion. It also summarises the results of an investigation into the parameters which govern the specification of a numerically controlled point to point drilling machine.Item Open Access Drilling system design project 1967 final report of drill head committee(College of Aeronautics, 1967) Boshier, G. C.; Pike, G. W. H.This report outlines the design of the Drill Head for a numerically controlled drilling machine. The Committee chose to employ a nydraulic main spindle drive. As a result of the problems experienced by Wadkin Limited, Leicester, with hydraulic feed control, it was decided to replace the original hydraulic feed actuator by a conventional 18 speed gearbox. Drill depth control is achieved by conventional gate stops employing pneumatic sensing elements to keep in line with the fluidic elements of the control system. The latter section of the report makes recommendations for future work on the design of feed mechanisms to avoid the use of gearboxes.Item Open Access Grinding cycle control project 1967(College of Aeronautics, 1967) Boshier, G. C.An investigation has been made into the sequential control of a grinding machine using electro—pneumatic, ball valve and wall attachment switching elements. Each system has been tested on a grinding cycle simulator and also to a limited extent when applied on a grinding machine. A technical assessment has been made of each system. In the case of the pure fluid system it was necessary to design and build an amplifying and switching circuit before the tests could be carried out and reports are presented of these investigations.
