SCRAPE TEST: The scrape setup was developed to test the adhesion strength of the ice accreted within the technological samples. It consists in a scraper, shaped to match the inside of the pipe, which is pulled until a piece of ice of dimension 20x20 mm is delaminated from the surface of the pipe. The force needed to remove the pipe is measured by a load cell (more details on [1]). Only test matrix condition #2 was used as the other condition did not provide enough ice for the scrape test to give suitable results. In addition, condition #1 require the turbocharger to run at a relatively high RPM of 60,000 in an off-design condition (with an air-water mixture being fed through the turbine) which meant there was an increased risk of breakdown. The procedure of the test is as follow: -The pipe sample is removed from the turbo assembly and moved into the freezer to stabilize as quickly as possible (the operation takes around 1 minute). -A slot of 20x20mm is then cut into the ice within the point of maximum accretion. The pipe is then placed into the V-base of the test setup which is adjusted using the knob of the scissors lift underneath until the scraper is just above the surface of the pipe. -It’s important that the scraper does not touch the pipe surface, or it can damage the coatings if it scrapes it. Once the position is set, the scraper is moved till it makes slight contact with the front face of the slot. -The load cell is then fitted to the arm with the Emerson Aventics pneumatic actuator with an 80mm bore. The actuator arm is then engaged to meet the scraper arm. Once the datalogging is started, the pneumatic actuator then loads the scraper arm until the ice is delaminated from the surface. -The resultant force is captured with the help of the PCM BD-ST-615 bi-directional load cell into the LabView interface within the control room PC. (Dual values for Scrape test 5 on AAFsmooth are due to doubts that the inital test was wrong. So a repeat test was conducted on the same sample with a new ice block cut into the accreted ice).
